Catholic Health Foundation

The Catholic Health Foundation of Greater Boston, Inc. (“Catholic Health Foundation”) exists to provide financial support to nonprofit organizations that provide health care and health care services consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church within the 144 cities and towns that comprise the Archdiocese of Boston.

The corpus of the Catholic Health Foundation comes from the endowments previously held by the hospitals that were part of the former Caritas Christi hospital system. In 2013, the Supreme Judicial Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts issued a cypres judgment allowing those hospital endowments to be distributed to the new Catholic Health Foundation, with “the unrestricted funds to be used for the general purposes of the Catholic Health Foundation, and those that had more particular purposes to be allocated to that purpose category that is closest to the original gift.”

The funds were received by the Catholic Health Foundation on October 1, 2013. We expect to continue to annually distribute four percent of the market value of each fund.  Since making our first grants in June 2014, we have distributed 352 grants totaling over $3.9M.
